Data on a drive is at risk at all times. A recent story is the hack into the Sony Playstation. This database included player information and credit cards. Sony has said that the credit card information was encrypted and not currently at risk, but a hack still occured and not everyone has the same amount of data protection as Sony.

A recent Google search for Data Destruction will locate many different articles on many different topics.
One example is the recent loss of many GMail accounts which are currently being recovered. This is an example of data being stored on using Cloud Computing and an error making it inaccessible. This problem is being rectified and all the lost data is expected to be restored.
