When Shredding isn’t Sketchy

Most of us watch movies, and we all know what it means when the bad guys is shredding the papers. Shredding papers has practically become synonymous with hiding the truth or destroying the evidence.

In the real world of Identity theft and high security risks. Shredding is not only appropriate but it is sometimes necessary for the safety of a company and its customers.

Shredding papers destroys information and in a corporate environment where companies are dealing with sensitive information of a client, garbage cans are not enough. Papers that are left intact can be picked up by competitors or identity theives. Vital company information being picked up by someone like this can lead to disasterous results for a company.

The worry of “destroying the evidence” by our fictional villian is not however, only based on fiction. There are times when shredding information can be very sketchy and worrying.  To respond to this, there are ways to minimize the risk of appearing shady in the eys of others.

  1. Shred on a regular Basis - if a company consistently destroys information then the concern is not as great as sudden or sporadic shredding.
  2. Use the same shredding method or contractor for all shredding, don’t have most of your information go to a contracted shredder, while certain papers remain to be destroyed in other processes. This draws attention to the papers destroyed differently, why aren’t these papers included with the others?
  3. Shredding equally is another concern, if only certain papers get shredded and others go into a trash bin, then it draws attention.
  4. Have a developed Destruction Policy- in case anyone doubts your reasoning or actions, if you have a solid plan and can show that you follow it then you won’t get caught red handed and be at a loss for words.

The information provided above is sourced from a pamphlet distributed by NAID called “Shred For all the Right Reasons” It is one of the many pamphlets and other marketing media produced by NAID. But there is more to it now. With the more recent concern of cyber-criminals, papers aren’t the only thing being destroyed. We live in a world where tables and databases exist on computers. The concerns of shredding apply just as much to paper as they do to your computer. If someone got ahold of your hard drive after you tossed out an old computer, they could have access to a whole treasury of information.

Shredding is not always sketchy, often times it is the law, or it is the safest option to protect an entire company and all of its customers.
