Hands Across The Nation (HATN)

HATN is a non-profit organization that works in Bolivia (South America) and Mali (West Africa) to provide the local residents with basic necessities that allow individuals to live more productive lives.  HATN is completely run by volunteers with no paid employees. Every dollar that they raise or donation that is given directly benefits the people in the communities that HATN serves.

Greg Madeley is the founder and executive director of the organization. He is a dynamic individual with a passion for helping people. Every spare moment he has away from his work at Sick Kids is dedicated to Hands Across The Nation.

Mali is the poorest country in Africa with a high infant mortality rate and an average life expectancy of 45 years.  Starting in 1994 Greg and his organization have worked in a village called Mana in Mali, West Africa. With his team they have built a school and dormitories and recently they finished building a health care center that is serving 5000 people from surrounding villages. HATN is also helping to improve the health of villagers by providing clean sources of drinking water. Similar work is being done in villages in Bolivia.

Greg is very excited about the future of Hands Across The Nation. With the success of the past projects many other villages are requesting Greg’s help. He has a board of directors that helps to choose the projects that will have the greatest benefit from limited resources.

Vernon Technology Solutions became involved with HATN through the donation of computers for the doctors at the health center. The computers allow the doctors to electronically record patient information and other services that the doctors provide.

Data Loss can be very Expensive

This blog has discussed many different articles from many different sources about the topic of Data Security and proper disposal of data. This repetition is necessary. Data being comprimised is a very costly and very dangerous to a company. ITBusiness- “Business Advantage through Technology” in month of February also posted a Data Security article that I want to draw to your attention.

This article, like all the others presented in the blog discuss why Data security and proper distruction is vital to a company. This article adds one thing that until now I had not seen.

A DOLLAR VALUE for being compromised. Using studies and calculations based on average cost of a data breach, citing the Ponemon Institute LLC, the cost of each compromised customer record comes to an average of $202. This value has gone up significantly from the $138 cited in 2005.

The value used is obviously not a garunteed average every time, there are MANY factors involved. But on top of all the expenses for covering and fixing the error, the biggest cost is the loss of business. A first time comprimise can be much more damaging to a company, as it gets all the customers worried. Customer trust falls dramatically.
