Data being comprimised is a very costly and very dangerous to a company. ITBusiness- “Business Advantage through Technology” in month of February also posted a Data Security article that I want to draw to your attention.

This article, like all the others presented in the blog discuss why Data security and proper distruction is vital to a company. This article adds one thing that until now I had not seen.

A DOLLAR VALUE for being compromised. Using studies and calculations based on average cost of a data breach, citing the Ponemon Institute LLC, the cost of each compromised customer record comes to an average of $202. This value has gone up significantly from the $138 cited in 2005.

The value used is obviously not a garunteed average every time, there are MANY factors involved. But on top of all the expenses for covering and fixing the error, the biggest cost is the loss of business. A first time comprimise can be much more damaging to a company, as it gets all the customers worried. Customer trust falls dramatically.
