Value added Article July 20, 2009 - A hammer to the Disk Drive is not enough.
This article is a press release for GES - Global Environmental Services.
The first 3 paragraphs of the article are where this blog is going to focus.
The first paragraph warns that many companies are vulnerable to Data Theft from Discarded Drives. This is very true and many previous blogs attest to this fact by discussing companies that have fallen victim to data retreival techniques.
The Second Paragraph explains that Data is retrievable from the rapidly rotating platters with Magnetic surfaces. So Hammers and Nail guns to the drive aren’t enough.
The third Paragraph says to prevent data retreival you can Shred the whole drive to tiny pieces or Completely re-write the disk. The second solution is not 100% assured and some data techniques can read old data even after overwriting. The first solution works, but doesn’t solve the problem as decsribed in Paragraph 2.
The way data is retreived is connected to the platters and the Magnetic surface. So the easiest Data destruction technique would deal with that directly. The Vernon Hard Disk Crusher drills through the hard disk’s spindles and physically creates ripples in the platters making it impossible to recover the data.
Watch The Hard Disk Crusher In Action.
GES has the right idea and it is true that complete drive shredding will also solve the problem. This blog is not to say that their method is invalid. In fact it is the opposite. It is good that there are many companies ensuring proper data destruction, because it is a very real and dangerous threat that many people do not know about.
