A recent Google search for Data Destruction will locate many different articles on many different topics.

One example is the recent loss of many GMail accounts which are currently being recovered. This is an example of data being stored on using Cloud Computing and an error making it inaccessible. This problem is being rectified and all the lost data is expected to be restored.

On the other end of the spectrum is the final ID card destruction from the Government in Essex. This is a destruction from which there will not be restoration.  This involved disk drives being magnetically wiped and then shredded to be sure that the data cannot be retrieved ever again. Read more…

Data Security is a big buzz word these days.

After the big Wikileaks incident: it becomes very clear the potential harm that can come of Data being leaked out that is supposed to be confidential. Regular news posts keep informing us all of new incidents and troubles based on the leaked information. Read more…

The Vernon Hard Disk Crusher is designed to destroy hard drives in order to ensure that the data on them is never accessed again.

Using a drill and crushing the drive may seem like overkill but in fact it is an industry norm.

Hard Disk Destruction might initially seem like overkill when it is possible to simply wipe a drive, but this in not true.

Many methods of wiping a drive are not permanent and experienced dumpster divers have learned tricks to retreiveing the information.

An added danger comes when businesses or companies dispose of full computer without even wiping the information off the drives. This means that full drives full of customer data may be available for someone who finds the drive.

Please see the following article about Hard Drives found intact in Ghana and the effect that just tossing away old computers is having on the world. http://www.dailyevergreen.com/story/32549

Vernon Technology Solutions offers businesses Hard Disk Destruction services and Hardware Recycling Solutions.

Recycling can help save our planet and your budget, and data destruction can save your company from a rather dangerous liability in the case that sensitive data from one of your drives is recaptured.

Hard Drive Destruction is the safest method of removing your data. This may seem a little drastic, but any other method might leave you wondering if a criminal can still get his hands on your data.

For businesses that store information abot customers including names, credit cards, locations and more, you want to be 100% sure that no one can ever retrieve your information

Computers with full hard drives have been sold online and other people have been able to get their hands on sensitive data, but even more alarming is the ability of theives to read data after it has been wiped. A criminal with the right technology can recover data even after you hit delete and then degauss or wipe the drive.

Identity Theft is a very serious issue in our world today. Phishing scams and Dumpster diving are just a few ways that criminals can get access to your information. However when it comes to businesses, the threat can get even more alarming. Criminals might come after your database and if they succeed it will cost you dearly.

When you dispose of an old computer, destroying data takes a lot more then just sending it to the “Recycle Bin”. You want to be sure that every trace of your information is gone. If a criminal gets his hands on your machine, it had better be empty or you could face some very heavy fines.

Throwing your data on the street or into the sewer is not a best practice

This picture is taken at the corner of Alden Road and Esna Park Drive right next to the Vernon Technology Solutions Head Office. This picture is real, but this is NOT the way to safely dispose of your data.

In Santa Clarita, there is a Safe Data Disposal event coming up soon:
http://www.the-signal.com/news/article/18642/

Events like these may not be common, but they lead the way in showing people the best practices and safest ways to destroy your data. By properly destroying your data you protect yourself from identity fraud and help keep our world clean.

For safely disposing of Computer and Technology products and to protect your identity and secrets from theft, there are two important measures that must be taken.

  1. To protect your data- you should physically destroy your Hard-drives and disks
  2. To protect the environment - you should properly recycle all your electronics.
Computers and other electronics do not go into the garbage. Take them to a recycler or send them to Vernon Technology Solutions.

The picture may be a good example of destruction, but it is definitely not an environmentally friendly way to go about it. Littering the streets or the sewers with old disks is not a good practice. It may seem obvious, but this picture is real; I took it myself on my phone, only a block away from our office where we deal in data destruction and recycling.

Please visit www.computer-recycling.com for more details about Recycling your electronics and for protecting your data please visit www.vernoncrusher.com

With your help, the world can prevent identity theft and keep our environment clean.

Data Security - Make sure you do it right

Value Added Article - Easy ways to erase secure data from hard drives

Unfortuanatly for this article, the title is the downfall. The reason these methods are easy is because they are not always effective!

When it comes to Data security it pays to be extra careful and constantly vigilant. Make sure that when you want to destroy your data, you are 100% sure it is irretriivable. Please see www.VernonCrusher.com

The article starts off with a very concerning statistic - Almost half of the computers sold on E-bay contain private information including Social Security numbers, family names, contacts, financial records and more. Then it continues to describe how pressing delete on the keyboard or putting an object into the recycle bin isn’t enough.

The analogy made in the article to a board with Visible and Deleted is quite good. I am a fan of this analogy. I suggest it for everyone to read, tech oriented or not.

The troubling part of the article comes with the solutions. Data wipes are not always 100% irretrievable and though they make data much harder to retreive, the data remains. When dealing with vital information, this certainly is not acceptable. A company would still be liable if the information retrieved after a data wiping process.

The second solution of selective Destruction is also suspect as backups are sometimes saved in remote or unknown locations. So in essencse, even though you think a file is gone, a backup could exist that you don’t remember or don’t even know about.

The third solution is also not infallible. Data is stored specifically on the platter and read off of the spindles, so if you use a hammer and a screw driver but do not hit these hotspots; then it is just a simple task to put the platter and spindles into a working drive and retrieve the information.

I want to make it clear all of these solutions make data very much harder to find and in most cases are probably sufficient. I commend the article writer on his list and his knowledge.

For companies that are selling their computers I would have to suggest more definitive destruction solutions. If you store customer information on a computer and that information is compromised, you are liable and can be held accountable. The financial penalties can be considerable and your reputation severely damaged.

To be 100% sure that your data is destroyed and never retreivable again by any means you have to completely crush and destroy the splindles and platter.

Vernon Technology Solutions offers the Vernon Hard Disk Crushing Service all across Canada as well as in the United States. The hard disk crusher renders the drives unusable for any means after destruction. VTS provides all documentation and a certificate of destruction. VTS is members of NAID (National Association of Information Destruction), CompTIA Trustmark certified as well as OES (Ontario Electronic Stewardship) authorized. VTS has crushed thousands of drives for major banks and government entities.

For your business, don’t use a homemade solution that works most of the time. Vernon has over 25 years of experience and can give you Visual Verification that your data is gone forever. Care, custody and control.
